The Datai Langkawi: An Extraordinary Rainforest Luxury Retreat
Sustainable Architecture at The Datai
Architects Didier Lefort and Kerry Hill set foot on the untouched shores of Langkawi, Malaysia in the early '90s, determined to build the nation’s inaugural luxury resort. Captivated by the stunning beach adjacent to an ancient tropical forest, the duo pledged to not only preserve the old-growth jungle but to also design the resort in a way that it would unveil the hidden wonders of nature.
Their design philosophy and commitment to safeguarding this segment of the rainforest and its indigenous culture garnered them the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001. Nearly thirty years on, with the resort showing signs of time, manager Arnaud Girodon sought the founders' vision for a thoughtful renovation that would maintain the resort's unique character.
The restoration was mindful, with timber from fallen trees repurposed for structural elements like roofs, frames, and stilts, and local artisans enlisted to craft bespoke carpets and chandeliers, thus retaining the resort's soul and sustainable ethos.
Accommodation: A Blend of Comfort and Elegance
The resort boasts 121 rooms including jungle villas and beach villas with private pools, each offering an enclave of comfort and splendor. The Datai Estate Villa, with its lavish five bedrooms, twin pools, and a suite of amenities complete with dedicated butler service, stands as the epitome of indulgence.
